Frequently Asked Questions
Ecofiltro's filtration performance has been evaluated through laboratory testing. Results vary depending on the contaminant and the test conditions. For specific results, please refer to our Filtration Effectiveness page.
Ecofiltro uses a porous ceramic filtering unit. Its filtration performance depends on the type of contaminant and the conditions tested. For specific results, please refer to our published laboratory tests.
Ecofiltro Europe is intended for use with tap water only. If you have concerns about your water quality, consult a qualified laboratory or your local water authority. Filtration performance varies depending on the contaminant and the conditions tested.
Ecofiltro combines clay, activated carbon, and colloidal silver in its filtration system. Laboratory results are available for specific contaminants under defined test conditions. The results should not be generalized to substances that have not been tested.
In laboratory testing, no 70 µm polystyrene beads were detected after filtration in tests conducted on three filter units (Measurlabs, 2025). This result applies to the specific particles and test conditions used.
We do not currently have test evidence supporting a claim that Ecofiltro reduces limescale or water hardness.
Yes, Ecofiltro effectively removes any bad odor or taste from the water, thanks to the activated carbon component.
We recommend using Ecofiltro with potable tap water within Europe for optimal filtration results.
It is not recommended to use the filter with hot water. The materials comprising it are not resistant to high temperatures and may reduce the lifespan of the filtering unit.
We do not currently have test evidence supporting claims that Ecofiltro adds or preserves essential minerals.
Ecofiltro in Europe is intended for use with tap water only.
While it removes bacteria effectively, it may not eliminate viruses or other potential contaminants found in well or rainwater. If you’re considering using Ecofiltro with a non-tap water source, we recommend testing your water first and comparing the results with our published studies on Ecofiltro’s performance.

Ecofiltro operates without electricity and is designed for everyday use. The filter's lifespan depends on water usage and local water conditions. At the end of its useful life, the filtering unit may be suitable for reuse as a plant pot.
Ecofiltro offers an alternative to purchasing bottled water and operates without electricity. Potential savings depend on household water consumption, product lifespan, and the cost of bottled water.
The filter's lifespan depends on factors such as water consumption, temperature, and water hardness. Bacterial filtration performance has been tested up to 5,000 litres. The time required to reach this volume varies depending on daily water usage.
Yes, we recommend performing maintenance every 6 months. If you live in an area with very hard water (high lime content), we suggest performing maintenance every 3 months. However, you can choose to perform maintenance more frequently if desired. Learn more about how to perform maintenance HERE.
Yes, it is normal. The dark coloration is a result of the activated carbon, one of the active components of Ecofiltro, which becomes concentrated during the high-temperature baking process.
Yes, at the beginning of using your Ecofiltro, you may notice a slow filtration rate. This occurs because the filter unit is new and needs time to undergo the natural process of opening the pores within its walls. The filter operates by gravity; therefore, the more you fill the unit, the more pressure the vessel will receive, accelerating the opening of the pores. With continued use, the pores will open to 100%, reaching their normal filtration.
The filter's lifespan depends on water usage and local water conditions. Follow the maintenance guidance provided for your Ecofiltro model and replace the filtering unit according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Ecofiltro is made from different materials, each of which may require a different disposal method. Please follow local waste-management guidelines for the container, lid, tap and filter unit. The used filter unit may also be repurposed as a plant pot, provided it is suitable for that use.
Don't discard the used filter unit; instead, repurpose it as a pot for plants. Alternatively, break it into smaller pieces and use it as fertilizer to contribute to sustainable gardening practices.
If you choose not to repurpose the used filter unit, please ensure it is disposed of with organic waste.
For holiday periods longer than one week or during times of occasional use, we recommend keeping your Ecofiltro filled with water, both in the upper filter unit and in the lower container. This helps prevent the ceramic filter from drying out, which typically happens after about one week without use.
When you return, simply empty any standing water and refill the unit with fresh tap water as usual.
For extended absences (over 3 weeks), we also recommend performing a basic maintenance of the filtration unit. You can follow the step-by-step instructions here: Ecofiltro Maintenance Guide
Colloidal silver is applied to the ceramic filtering unit during manufacture.
Laboratory reports describe results for specific tested substances and conditions. View test results.
However, regarding nitrates and nitrites, we currently do not have conclusive results that guarantee that Ecofiltro is capable of reducing or completely filtering their levels in water. Further studies are required, and we do not recommend relying on Ecofiltro for nitrate removal in areas where these levels are a concern.
Yes, this is normal. During the initial pore-opening process, some clay particles may settle at the bottom of the container and give the water a slight earthy taste. We recommend filling and emptying the container a few times until the taste diminishes. The discarded water can be reused for watering plants.
Ecofiltro originated in Guatemala, Central America, over 30 years ago. Since then, its use has expanded to encompass most countries in Latin America, the USA, Canada, Europe, Africa, and Asia.
Yes, it is normal behavior as clay, a natural element, brings more minerals to the water.
No, it maintains the good mineral salts but eliminates harmful substances.
