History

The story of Ecofiltro begins with Guatemalan scientist Dr. Fernando Mazariegos. Tasked with a project for the Inter-American Development Bank, he embraced the challenge of developing an effective, ecological, and cost-efficient method for water purification.

The necessity stemmed from the widespread lack of access to potable water in many regions of Guatemala, particularly in rural households. This challenge couldn't be adequately addressed through reliance solely on charitable donations.

After extensive research and numerous prototypes, Ecofiltro emerged—a water filtration system crafted from 100% natural materials, embodying the original goals of efficacy, sustainability, and affordability.

Owing to its user-friendly design and outstanding performance, Ecofiltro swiftly gained popularity, prompting the company's transformation into a socially responsible, non-profit organization. Its primary objectives are enhancing public health and quality of life by providing access to clean water while combating environmental plastic pollution.

In 2012, Ecofiltro S.A. inaugurated a state-of-the-art factory near Antigua, Guatemala, with a production capacity of 8,000 to 10,000 filters per month.

In 2019, the establishment of Ecofiltro Europe S.L. facilitated the introduction of this technology into the European market, expanding its reach into new territories and amplifying efforts to address the environmental crisis.

In recognition of Ecofiltro's commitment to social and environmental responsibility, we proudly achieved B Corp certification in February 2020. This milestone further underscores our dedication to promoting sustainable practices and enhancing public health.

Today, Ecofiltro is accessible across most countries in Latin America, the USA, Canada, Europe, Africa, and Asia, empowering communities worldwide to access quality water within their homes without contributing to plastic waste or energy consumption.
